Borough Workshop Follow Up 8-5-09

Ironically, someone sent a comment about the Downtown area and the Transit Village to the Matawan Advocate, the night of the Borough Council Workshop meeting. They were asking if any mention of these topics were presented at the Borough Council meeting. Well, the Mayor must have ESP, because at last night's meeting Mayor Buccellato diverted from the scheduled Agenda. He opened up a discussion between the Borough Attorney and the Borough Administrator regarding revising the process for which businesses obtain licenses
in the Borough. Following a short discussion it was decided to move forward with a revision to be introduced at the next regular Council meeting for a vote. This should revise the current old process and make it easier for businesses to obtain licenses. It is about time Matawan encouraged new businesses. A step in the right direction.
Another topic of interest was the Borough employees Health Insurance coverage. Quite frankly, we have to dig a little deeper into this subject before making any comment.
Bill List did not have any Council members firms or family owned firms listed for payment.
More to follow on the Health Insurance.
Hope to see you at the regular scheduled Borough Council Meeting....

From what I understand there was already a big change in employee insurance that was a large benefit to the borough.

have there been any discussion about merging aberdeen and matawan together??

Yup and the discussion always starts with the police department. Worst move this town will make. There are plenty of other departments to start with if they are serious with merging parts of the town. We all know that Matawan will not just merge with Aberdeen. One of the councils will have to go with it. Start with the Road Department that's duties have been pretty much outsourced. Sell off the millions in equipment that the former administrator obtained for his good friend despite not having the manpower to use them.

Yeah great idea, get rid of the Matawan Police Department when the economy is getting worse and crime is climbing throught the country. I dont' think so. Yes that includes Matawan. Now would be the time to build the police department. From what I understand it is the same size as in the early 80's. You can't tell me that the department is not busier then the 80's with the same amount of officer's. I am sure the population (documented or not) has climbed since the 80's.

The only thing thats climbed since the 80's in Matawan is police salaries.

Just curious, if you merge Matawan Police and Aberdeen Police (which the Union would never allow) how is Matawan best served? Do we keep our Police Station? What happens to our Police Force? Do these seasoned law enforcement people become jobless? Who protects Matawan?

Why is no one asking to consolidate the Board of Ed? Why is no one asking to merge all the Borough and Towns in Monmouth County into one central Board of Education. Unions, my friends. Try to say something about teachers salaries, benefits, etc. and see how fast the cards and letters will come rolling in. Don't get us wrong we believe teaching is a noble profession. We would like to see the tax burden of education fall under a wider group of taxpayers. Matawan is getting swallowed up by taxes with no end in site.

Why single out the Police, why not question the biggest part of Matawan's Budget, the School Board? Didn't hear you mention the increase the teachers have had each year and their benefits package. FYI, the recent negotiations for the Matawan Police salaries, they worked with the Borough not against it.

To the 4th Anonymous, you have got to be kidding me with that comment. If you are a resident of Matawan you need to open your eyes. The traffic is unreal there are more people moving around town then ever before. I would guarantee the numbers at that police department are climbing. I will have to look into it. The doors are closed for 16 plus hours a day at the police department, I want more from my department not less. There pay does not even come close to most of the towns in the state. Advocate I agree with you that the problem in this town and state is the BOE. Way to much tax money is going to them and it is not fair to other important departments. If the police merged the department would be gone. No one would lose there jobs but it all would be out of the Aberdeen Police Department I am sure. There was a study done by the unions in the early 90's. From what I understand the plan would have left 1 officer to patrol the entire Borough of Matawan. 1 officer, I am pretty sure that would hurt the response time of the our police department.
