Last night's Borough Council meeting was somewhat routine.
Mayor Buccellato announced a generous donation of $1,000. to the July 4th Fireworks Fund, given by Matawan residents, Jim & Donna Tumbutly, (pls forgive if misspelled.) Matawan's Fire Department also collected $108. made by visitors in the donation pail. Kudos to these fine residents and the Fire Dept for their efforts. The Fireworks were glorious!
So now you are wondering what bomb could the Mayor have dropped last night. Do you all recall an Ordinance mentioned several months ago, prohibiting elected officials in the Borough from performing work for the Borough? It had been an item Councilman Joseph "Bud" Mullaney was calling for back in March 2008. Under the guise of bringing "good clean government" to Matawan. HA! At that time we applauded Councilman Mullaney for his efforts. Short lived, perhaps. No, short lived, definitely! Several months ago this Ordinance was on the Agenda, then mysteriously was taken off. Without explanation from the Mayor and Council this was done several times. Now this became a pet peeve of ours. After all, who doesn't want Matawan to have "good clean government." It appears that Councilman Mullaney had a change of heart and hired an attorney to stop this Ordinance from coming before the Council for a vote. The implication was a lawsuit would be brought against Matawan. All this from a Councilman who back in March of 2008, was citing Holmdel's Ordinance and was going to look to surrounding towns for guidance.
Mayor Buccellato announced from the dais that he has requested the Attorney General look into this matter on behalf of Matawan to protect the Borough. This has to be a case of "THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY." A Councilman threatening the Borough residents (he was elected to protect and serve) with a possible lawsuit in order for Council members to financially profit from their position.
A resident stepped up to the podium and read from Mullaney's interview back in March 2008 given to a local blogger, The Clamdigger. Quotes were read from Councilman Mullaney which clearly contradict his current position. What could have changed his mind, you ask? Well, gee whiz Goober, whose interest is Councilman Bud Mullaney looking to protect? It is our position it is not Matawans! And this Councilman is running for re-election this November. You be the judge in November!
For the record, the opinions on this Blog are based on documented evidence. You have the right to disagree. However, the printed, published commentary are based on printed, published interviews given by Councilman Joseph "Bud" Mullaney to The Clamdigger in March 2008.
Hope to see you at the next Council meeting.....

Outrageous!!! Does anyone know how much Mullaney's business and Councilman Mendes family owned business has billed the town in the last year? I would love to see those numbers. Mullaney's flip flop on this issue needs to be addressed!!! What gives Mr. Mullaney???
Key Auto Body (Councilman Mendes' family owned business)exact figures will be published shortly. Rumor has the number 46% as the amount of Borough business. Key Auto Body has continued to be the towing company for the Borough. Councilman Mendes is no longer the Chairman of the Police Dept. Last year it was noted Compact Auto Body did repairs on Police Dept vehicles. One of our gripes with the Council is that the Bill List is not always available on line. Therefore, it is time consuming to get the numbers. BUT, we will.
Thanks for your comments. Nice to her we are not alone in our thoughts on "good clean government."
Who is going to write this blog when you move to DE next week? Bye Bye!
To our loyal fans, this blog will continue with the same group who write it now.
Haven't forgotten about getting facts on exactly how much business Mullaney and Mendes do for the Borough. BTW, anyone who wants info from the Borough has to file an OPRA form. Now it is supposedly anonymous. However, if you fill out the paperwork and pay for copying, you must get a receipt. The receipt has your name, amount collected, etc. on it. So much for anonymous.

Unfortunately until the residents of Matawan, start taking care of themselfs nothing will happen. We all know the amount of
pandering that occurs in this town. And anyone that says that they don't is either lying, or they just do not care. Mr. Mullaney
has controlled this town for years, the man has been running around this town doing what ever he wants and breaking rules that apply
to others but not to him. I mean the man is suing the town, and the people in this town do nothing. We all know about his lap dogs
who follow him, and take care of his every whim for the hope of gaining favor, it is time the town people rise up and tell
this man that he is not the supreme leader.
Hard Case, We understand your frustration and agree with you. We'd like to clear one item up. Councilman Mullaney hired(or quid pro quo)an attorney to sue the Borough IF the Borough proceeded with the proposed Ordinance Prohibiting Elected Officials from performing work for the Borough. Mayor Buccellato is writing a letter to the Attorney General of NJ requesting clarification. In other words, can a Council person prevent the Council from voting on such an Ordinance and if the Council votes for it can a Council person(s) SUE to prevent it from being enforced. Sounds like a lot of BS to us.
With Mullaney running this Nov. for re-election, it would behoove him to worry about the finances of the Borough instead of his personal finances. Matawan has serious issues to deal with and Mullaney's/Mendes business finances should not be a priority of a Council person. This shouldn't prevent business persons from running for Borough Council, but it should prevent business persons from profiting from being on the Borough Council. If your business requires work from the Borough to survive, then your priorities are not in the best interests of the Borough. Plain and simple! We want Council members who are working in the best interests of the residents!
